Bell May, as she likes to be referred as, is “old school”; an activist, a feminist, but most of all a humanist, Bell May professes to use art as her medium and platform by which to take up the issue of human plight for freedom. As a WordPress developer, I relished the opportunity to build a wordpress artist website. WordPress is the perfect platform for a working artists, somebody how is not going to have the time to fiddle around with their internet presence and instead focus on the core of their being – creating art. With the amazing image handling capabilities built into WordPress, the website developer can create show off website that will still load blazingly fast. Combining those image capabilities with excellent caching and content delivery network plugins will result in a image centric site that won’t slow the user down.

Bell May is not only a talented artist, but bi-lingual as well. One requirement was to offer visitors, who would be coming from both the United States and Mexico, the ability to view descriptive text in either Spanish or English without going the the complication and expense of a complete bi-lingual site. To keep cost down and the translated texts perfect tabbed content boxes were used.

The website is a very basic WordPress site with a fun photo slideshow, powered by Vslider. Donations are accepted on the site via PayPal or direct bank deposit. We had a nice Stripe payment gateway setup but discovered they could not accept international payments through stripe – too bad. Stripe is a great way to accept website donations. In fact, many e-commerce plugins have integrated the Stripe payment gateway.

Note: Kala passed away and the website, while fun and effective has been discontinued.

Babies at Play is a great example of what can be done with a custom created theme. Babies at Play was created by Paula Escobar a fashion designer and mother. Paula has had a successful career in the Fashion Industry as a designer and buyer for some of Australia’s biggest labels expanding over many years. At the Age of 29 she fell pregnant with her first child.

WordPress and Bec

With WordPress, Bec is able to keep on top of her many categories of interest. Consider:

 Bec and Instagram

An important part of the design brief was to enable Bec to use the instagram app on her iphone to post images to her blog. This was accomplished by creating a flickr account on her behalf. Bec was then able to use instagram on her phone to share her images to flickr. The website then pulls in the images from flickr and presents them in a pleasing and functional fashion.

Have a Question?

Blog users can Ask Bec a Question – by registering on the site users can then post questions to Bec and get answers. The registration process leverages WordPress’s functions and MailChimp’s API.

Convert existing website to WordPress where Giant Management staff could make regular updates.

What did the trick with Giant was the creation of custom post types in the back end. These CPT’s made it easy for the staff to simply fill in the blanks and upload images. Adding new models, model images, blog posts and images became a breeze.
